Great weekend just gone by with 5 of us heading up to Race the Mens Crit at Noosa (Dave, Gilbert, Stu, Toby and myself). We had some good support from the Data 3 crew with Heathy, Aiden, Marty, Gilly and probably more shouting encouragement from the sidelines amongst the thousands of spectators who had assembled to watch the event.
Didn’t know exactly what to expect other than it was going to be hard and then I saw the guys we had to race against and the crowd that were there to watch which made it all the more exciting. The jostling for position started before the race had even made it to the start line but with 65 guys on a tight course I thought it would have been worse.

From the start the pace was on and it didn’t let up for the whole 40 minutes plus 3 lap race. There were multiple attacks off the front trying to get a break going but everything seemed to get pulled back in pretty quickly. Going from 50km/hr back to 20-25km/hr round the corners and then sprint back to 50km/hr again twice each lap really takes its toll on your legs.

The pre-race direction was to stay in the top 20 riders which sounds like a good idea but was pretty hard work. It seemed that whenever you moved up 5 – 10 places that a few seconds later a different 5 or 10 guys would overtake you and you end up in the same spot.
Gilbert and Stu were both riding strong but Stu flatted and got a dodgy wheel change which didn’t help. 40 minutes seemed to take a long time to come around but it was good fun and good experience for next year. In the end it was Jono Cantwell (Fly V) who won.
A big thanks to Heathy for organising everything for the team. Hopefully next year we will be more prominent in the race. We seem to be on the right track and the more we race together the better the team will get. We will have another this weekend at the Fusion Crit.
