8 of us turned up to muzz for skills this morning. We worked on leadouts and staged a series of 4-man - 1 lap lead-outs.
Objective:
- deliver sprinter in-front with 150m to go on most advantageeous lane
- achieve a pace from the outset that makes it extremely difficult for non-team riders to jump
- provide slightly obstructive traffic for riders trying to overtake lead-out
Key skills:
- sprinter is director and calls up the line the number of leadout men. He also helps guide the rider to peel off into other riders pushing past.
- the peel off is subtle
- the advantage of a team lead-out over a non-team lead out is
1. Known expectations of other riders and delivery zones
2. Tighter formation (more efficient)
3. Maximising effort where it helps the team
4. Advantage in echelon where sprinter is 1-man in gutter.
- hold-line in final 200m - this is mandatory
- communicate! Loud. Two-words max, frequent
- if you feel your lead-out is fading, you have to make a decision to pull your turn earlier, however the original delivery point remains crucial.
- if 1-extra-man - he is called the sweeper or boot rider and sits behind the sprinter. His role is to chase riders who jump. If this doesn't happen then he can be used to provide a 1+2 finish or if he is spent then he can peel off carefully before the final sprint to open up a gap (this may upset people)
- golden rule - if it doesn't go to plan, communicate and use initiative.
- golden rule 2 - don't use the lead-out every time. Try it for the primes or at the beginning to disrupt the race.
- gokden rule 3 - practice and trying it is the only way to get better
Regards
Andrew

It sure was a great session
Thing i learnt and saw.
We didnt communicate as much as we should.
One lead out Aiden didnt see bocky signal what side to peel around and they ended up blocking eachother. a call by aiden 'other side' or what ever would have avoided that.
When we are racing there wont be markers to signal when to peel off.. so you have to judge when you are fading or when your lead out is fading and call them over.
Damien and Chris are robbers in C grade and have excellent sprinting legs.. hurry up and move to B grade boys and we will lead you out.
great session I rekon
I agree, we really should be doing this more often with our "grade" team mates.
Tip top session!
One of the things I picked up on today was gear choice. A few times when I jumped out of the saddle to sprint I was in too big a gear and couldn't get and the jump and the cadence up as quick as I needed.
Should do it again in a few weeks.
if limy & bocky go up, I can then contemplate some podiums in C (classy) grade!
Worked out last night that Aiden and I were in an excellent position hitting the final straight. About 12th wheel. Sadly I didn't know I he was on my wheel so I gave a little sprint to finish about 10th and Aiden sprinted around me with 50m"s to go. Had he of called meto let me know I was leading him out we would have been close to placing. Only 5 m"s out of the money. Was a fast race. Good fun.
Communication is key.
