Gentlemen, thanks for turning up yesterday for our lead-out drill session. We did well by staying upright, not bringing down others and learned a couple of things along the way.
To recap, we deliberately formed our train without any order so that you can see now, I hope, that how you form your lead-out train is important. The two key positions are the 1st wheel who sets everything up and the last wheel who launches the sprinter. The job of those in between is to keep the speed up as high as possible and peel off as soon as they feel they can't keep the speed up anymore. Even if it's just a 5sec pull, do whatever you can and then get out of the way. Ideally, you need to leave the last guy with not too much to go before the sprinter takes over. In fact, this is one of the most difficult parts of the whole process - timing. If the last guy is left with 500m to go and he can only do 200, then we have a problem. This is why practice is important.
As I said at the end of the session, you should start practicing lead-outs in club races such as Muzz or Nundahdrome. You will stuff it up, you will make mistakes but sooner or later it will all start making sense and then when a big day comes around, you'll know what to do.
Keep it up.
Nikolai
