The first CQ event of the year started with a hitch as the saturday afternoon crit was canceled for safety reasons, which was disappointing for the D3 riders that made the journey.
Sunday RR we had perfect weather and in the elite A race we had Reuben, Nikolai, Dave Demarco, Richard Allen and my self.
Rolled out of the start fairly slowly and Reuben asked if we were still neutral? He said I might just do a little attack to mix things up a bit and off he went before the first climb, a few riders instantly reacted and i jumped on a wheel and by the top of the hill we had 8 or so guys and a fairly large gap to the peloton.
The pace was ridiculous at threshold the whole lap and i was on rivet over threshold up the hill. The breakaway group of 8 dropped down to 5 as the laps went on, the 5 riders left we're much stronger than my self and knowing my effort was not wasted by helping reuben as much as possible.
The quality of the breakaway
Reuben
Bevan Mason
Darren Rolfe
Adrian Booth
I definitely don't rate in that list!!
I found my self needing to miss turns up the hill as i was beginning to crack from lap 5 or so we were out to 3+ mins and on the 8th climb Darren Rolfe smacked us hard and the 5 of us were all spread across the road sprinting hard I never found a draft again and rode a lap and a half solo until the peloton collected me.
Meanwhile off the front Reuben found some wheels and rode the final 2 laps and attacked Adrian and Bevan with 1k to go and rode to the finish solo to claim a solid 2nd place (first u23) behind Darren Rolfe.
Well done Reuben.
Look forward to riding every early breakaway this year :)
Regards.
