Distance: 110km
Goodbye to the flats and hello climbs. Today’s stage presented the peleton to 1 x Cat4 and 3 x Cat3 climbs with two intermediate sprints. Weather was excellent with little breeze. The team started in all good spirits and the peleton stayed together until the 50km mark with a break well contained at 20-40 secs. The climb presented some hurdles and JaseP and David Brown became unhitched. David Brown regrouped with 3 other riders and with the aid of a downhill draft from the massive Tim Dalgliesh, and slipping past the caravan, they rehitched with the peleton. This was view by the DS in the team car and I was very impressed. Immediately after there were some more pinches that saw DaveB and later Damon to drop off. The pace was really on as this climb split the main peleton into two. Unfortunately this split moved to 3mins clear. We didn’t make the front half of the split however finished strong. Chewy tried an attack but got pulled back.
A day of missed opportunities in a heavy day of climbing. Stu Mulhern is sitting 16th in the U23 GC.
Sunday is a 99km Roadrace at 9:30pm which finishes with a decent and return ascent down the Murphy’s Crk (ALT Route up the range). This will finish at 12pm. A quick feed and rest and the crit starts at 2pm.
